I still ain’t dead

Filed under: Joomla, self referential — Eike @ April 10, 2009 11:36 am

It’s been quite a while since I posted something, and I’m long overdue with some necessary bugfixes – but I’m terribly busy at the moment, and will be for the next eight or ten days so there wont be much happening on this blog for the time being.

If you came here for the Joomla modules (and undoubtly you did) please use the correct downloads for the respective Joomla versions (I get a lot of mail from people who installed the wrong module for their J! installation and wondered why it didn’t work; I guess I have to redesign this website at some point).

“Contentitem Module” for Joomla 1.0.x

“Place here Module” for Joomla 1.5.x (v 1.2.2)

I think I will throw out the FAQ Section

Filed under: Joomla, self referential — Eike @ December 16, 2008 12:54 am

Those of you who post questions to the FAQ page will notice that it takes me much much longer to answer those than it takes me to answer comments. That because the spam filter does not work on the FAQ section and questions posted there will simply be drowned in spam. I’m not sure that this is actually helpful, so I might simply disable the FAQ and use the comments to answer your questions.

      Dein Wort in Gottes Ohr

Filed under: Science Fiction, self referential — Eike @ November 26, 2008 11:24 pm

“Dein Wort in Gottes Ohr! – Metaphrasen des Religiösen” is a series of events and speeches hosted by the Berlin venue Ausland – “a non-commercially run venue in berlin for music and performance and related public and non-public events”.

The events will take place on the four sundays before christmas an will, as it is fitting for the season, discuss the role of religion in contemporary society (and, as it is fitting for the Ausland, most of the discussing will be rather critical).

You will find the complete program here. I will be speaking at the 20th of December in a talk titled “Das Ende der Welt im Wandel der Zeit” (“The End of the word in the course of time”) about the way apocalyptic phantasies have been used in science fiction novels over the past 100 years to promote different ideological agendas.

If your in Berlin the days before christmas you might want to come along. Adress is here.

        I’m not really that fat

Filed under: Motorbike, self referential — Eike @ November 2, 2008 8:41 pm

It’s just all these clothes we motorbike people wear, I swear.

I recently visited a friend who bought a russian motorbike ( a copy of a mid 40s BMW, build by Dnepr in 1994) and I had a go at wrestling with the sidecar (on a parking lot, not on a public street, thus no helmet). Someday I have to get one of these things, too.

          Shoa.de – Another Relaunch Approaching

Filed under: Joomla, Projects, self referential, shoa — Eike @ October 30, 2008 12:49 pm

For some four years now I volunteer as a webmaster for shoa.de, one of the largest german Holocaust ressource sites. I moved it from the original static HTML pages to Mambo and through various Joomla Versions. When I was finally prepared to give on Joomla version 1.5 came along with the wonderful beez template, and I decided to give Joomla another go. Tomorrow will be the official relaunch on a new server, and with a new name, too. Shoa.de will still work (it is after all the name of the registered non-profit), but the main domain will be  the not particularly original zukunft-braucht-erinnerung.de.

I had hoped to make a bit of an event from the relaunch, but as things are going (I’m terribly busy and paid work goes first) I’m glad that I made it at all, and there are a lot of things left to do – the old page used tables for image captions that now need to be removed, some things (like pagination) are not styled at all, we purchased a cache component that I have been unable to get to work so far etc.  But still the new site is already looking much better than the old one, and now we have at least a solid base from which we can work our way towards accessibility.

So, why I am doing this?

Building or re-building a large website is a lot of work, even if you’re part of a team (graphics design was done by Thorsten Kaiser,  content editing is done mainly by shoa.de founder Stefan Mannes and his company kakoii.de and several other volunteers).

It is occasionally speculated in online forums (what is the plural of “forum” ?) that shoa.de is either heavily subsidized by the german federal government or that we are paid for by the Israel Mossad as part of a mission to make the innocent german people feel bad about themselves.

As they say, if I’m part of a conspiracy then where is my share?

In fact that shoa.de runs at all is mostly by courtesy of Thomas Kochler from the hosting company schuko.net, who donated the server and pays for our traffic. If you are looking for reliable and competent hosting in Germany you should consider him, it’s a tad more expensive than the big companies but you will get excellent service. Then there are fees from the members of the non profit (it think it’s 15 Euro per year and member), we got a little money when the portal won an award two years ago, and we get the occasional donation (though that’s usually not money – for example various publishing companies donated prices for a school contest we arranged). And even if there was money the charter of the non-profit forbids that we pay money to ourselves.

So if it’s not for the money why am I, why are we doing this ? After all the holocaust happened a long long time ago, isn’t it time to move on, put the memories to a rest, bla bla bla.

The answer is rather simple. Nazism, fascim, antisemitism in Germany are not things of the past. Quite on the contrary, in some areas at least they seem to be on the rise. The problem are not so much the violent fascist thugs, even if they routinely maim or kill foreigners or lefties. After all there are laws against assault and murder, and Germany has a police force that would be quite capable to enforce them. The problem is a form of public acceptance – it is widely believed that the political views of Nazism are understandable and justfied, and that just its’ methods are a little bit too extreme [1].

Well, I’m not going to accept it [2]. That Nazis should be allowed to go on while the people who are against Nazis should stop is, to me, unthinkable.

          That’s why.

          1. And of course in the aftermath of the german unification most of the left suffered a case of sudden spinelessness and converted to views that had been previously held only by the extremist right - "the boat is full" (so no more immigration), "we must protect our industry against jewish reparation claims" etc. So there is no real counterweight to the right anymore.
          2. And why would I? That the left are the losers of history is not because there is something wrong with being against nazis, or longing for a better world. It's because traditionally lefties are, in their majority,  wimps who would betray their every conviction and their comrades for a slap on the back from the right (Social Democrats, I'm looking at you). I don't have to do this to myself.

          The First Year

About one year ago I wrote the first post for this blog. Since then I wrote 117 posts that received 568 comments by 259 different visitors, and the statistic software counted ~ 65 000 visitors all in all (an average of 178 per day). So obviously I’m not an A-List Blogger (whatever that means) but it’s not that bad either. So thank you for visiting me, if there’s anything I can do for you don’t hesitate to ask (obviously that does not necessarily mean I’ll do it, but I will at least answer).

            Apologies

.. to all who wait for enhacements or bugfixes for the Joomla module. I’m recovering from a sunstroke (yes, Berlin summer is that hot) and have trouble concentrating, so everything will take longer than expected.

              Man, I’m tired

I very much like the german word Tagewerk – it’s a bit of an oldfashioned word (of course that’s why I like it) that literally translates to “a days work”. What it actually means is a man-day, or a billable day, and opposed to that other kind of day (chronological) it has only eight hours, which means that a freelancer like me can work a couple of days per day, provided he doesn’t attach great importance to mundane things like e.g. sleeping, eating or generally recreating.

I worked a number of Tagewerke over the weekend, and the coming week isn’t going to be much better (so still no merge feature for the place here module, I’m too busy). If you have asked a question about the module and haven’t received an answer yet you better ask again, chances are that I forgot about it.

Short Update on Module Developement Status

As you may have noticed, especially if you’ve sent a support request, things are currently going slowly here – I lag behind in answerings questions (this concerns, among other things, the reported problem with recent versions of Joomfish) and the 1.5 version of the module is still not feature complete.

Thing is, I’m not only swamped in work (that would be nothing new), I’m also caught in one of the nastiest traps for programmers – I work against a spec that does not actually make sense, so I have to try to mangle sense into the chaos by careful interpretation. That means I’m working or four or five hours, call the client to look at my work and spend the next four or five hours tearing everything down again. This is the kind of job I usually try to avoid, because even if they wanted to none of my clients could actually afford to put me through this kind of ordeal. But sometimes I have to put other things into consideration apart from money; even a one man shop sometimes needs to employ a certain degree of diplomacy.

Still, this means that at the moment I’m both overworked and underpaid, and this is not a good prerequisite to gather motivation for open source programming. Plus the modules mostly work, so there is no need for immediate intervention. I think (I hope!) that by the middle of the  next week the worst will be over and I can get back to do a bit module developement.

This is going to be fun

                  Filed under: Miscellaneous, Science Fiction, self referential — Tags: , , , — Eike @ January 12, 2008 2:56 pm

I’m a science fiction fan with a lot of surplus education (you don’t exactly need a background in social sciences to build websites), and sometimes I like to share my – well, it’s not really “wit”; I’m not a clever person, it’s just that I’m quite perseverant when I get interested in something. So when people let me I enjoy to share what I found out in my studies by doing public talks at smaller SciFi Cons. I just have received word that the funding for another such event has been approved, and I will talk about the way apocalyptical scenarios have been utilized over the years in SciFi-Novels to advance certain ideological points – working title is Das Ende der Welt im Wandel der Zeit (The End of the World in the Course of Time). The event will take place in December 2008, so there is plenty of time for me to prepare and who knows, maybe there will be stuff for a few blog posts.
