The not particularly clever named “Place Here Module” is an extension for the Joomla 1.5.x series that is designed to display Joomla articles in module positions (if you run Joomla 1.0.x you are looking for mod_contentitem). As of yet there is no user manual, so I will cover the options for the module in a few blog posts (nothing fancy, I’ll simply enumerate the options from top down and give a short explanation).
Here we go.
Type
- Possible values: Section, Category, Article
- The module displays either complete Section, Categories or idividual Articles
ID
- Possible values: The numeric ID of a Section, Category, Article, or a comma separated list of IDs
- You will find the IDs in table views of the Article/Section/Category managers (last column in the tables)
Number of items displayed
- Possible values: a numeric value
- Zero ( 0 ) means an umlimited numer of items (as many as there a items in the selected
- The module will display the entered number of items, even if there are more items in the selected section/category
Primary Ordering
- I have to admit I didn’t think much about the ordering options, I simply ripped this from another module and have never even tested it
- Order by category (or section) : if your articles are from different categories or section they will be ordered by the ids of the category or section
- The other options are pretty self-explanatory
Secondary Ordering
- When the primary ordering is ambigous (multiple items fullfill the same ordering criteria) secondary ordering kicks in ( I think)
Show / Hide yxz…
- works like in the article manager
- this setting depends a little on the template you use; the module comes with multiple template, and if the template you use does not include code to for example show the title the “show title” setting will do nothing
Lovely, makes joomla frontpage easy too split-up, i have a problem thou.
I want my category description too show the images. i have tried too change the url path in beez.php but the problem is that i have different pictures for different categories. And when i change the path i have to set one images/stories/picture.jpg for example, thats the only way too get it too show on frontpage….
I hope u understand my problem and i would be very glad if you could make some suggestions since my php knowledge is pretty weak…mayby its possible to point to the images/stories folder and not an specifik picture?
I have an yootheme template….

Kristoffer (Sweden)

Hi,
How do I upgrade from an older version of the “place here” module? If I uninstall it, all the items that are based on that module get deleted (or if they don’t actually get deleted, they go some place where I can’t find them). Please advise how to upgrade your module while maintaing my data.
Thanks!

Hi,
I’m new to Joomla and am attempting to use your module to pull content from 2 different categories. How do I get the “place here” module to sit in the main content area of the page? There is no module position setting for that location and I’m not sure how to define it. And if I include the module to my template .php file, will it screw up how the rest of the site flows content in that same area (even though those articles aren’t specifying the “main-content” area)?
Thanks!

I’m very new to Joomla and I wonder if ‘Place Here’ can do what I want. I have on my front page an article plus my latest blog article (I have a blog in its own category). That’s all fine.
What I hope your module will be able to help me with is having a similar look on other pages – an article plus the latest blog article. I want to be able to just update the latest blog article in one place, and have it then appear on all of the other pages.
In my mind it will look like….
Page 1
article 1
latest blog post
Page 2
article 2
latest blog post
Page 3
article 3
latest blog post
Can you see an easy way for ‘Place Here’ to help me with this? Thanks!

Hi Eike,
First of all I would like to join all your other fans in thanking for this great module which softens life a lot for most of us.
I’ve been using the module for quite some time without any problems but now I’m in front of a mystery and I’m not able to solve it. I want to make a page appear as additional info next to a main article. When I point it to the related article in the menu, it doesn’t show. If I point it to all articles it does to all articles including the one it is supposed to appear next to. This is driving me round the bend for a few days now. Any idea what the reason may be? Thx for assistance.

A very obtuse question . . .
What does the option “Exact” for the “Primary Ordering” parameter mean?

Doh…
Fixed my problem. In module advanced parameters, set caching to “no caching”.
Good work!

Good work, but am commenting to report my bug. Hope it helps.
I had it working perfectly about 6 months ago on an older version. Not sure which. It showed version 1.5 from 2007, but just updated to the current. I am using it only to display alerts (banner images in articles) from a category that can be scheduled to start/stop. Am finding that even when all articles are disabled and unpublished, the last article remains on my home page. Almost like it can’t release the last item when 0 articles are published in the category. I do not want the module to show anything when no articles are published. I see you are actively working on this… Hope this helps and if you need any examples let me know. Also had the – problem, but am following your comment to fix it…

Miha, sorry for the late reply. It would be possible to use select fields that use the names of the article/category/section instead of the ID (other user interfaces are not possible from within a module settings page). However that would mean you’d have a select field with the name of every article – not very convenient if you have dozens or hundreds of articles. So until Joomla introduces new ways to build a module settings page I guess I’ll stick with IDs.

Hi Eike
Thanks for a truly great module.
My own shortcomings are showing because I just can’t find where the extra at the end of the included piece comes from – it’s just above the footer after the “Provincial content” box at http://capeinfo.com
I’d really appreciate your help.
Thanks

hello eike, module is great help for me.
only one question about interface: didnt you think about any selection interface to pick up articles (categories, sections..) not only direct by id, but in new window – i mean something like in joomla menu-item edit interface… or like here (mod-article) http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/news-display/content-embed/9290 i think, this mod is calling common joomla “function”, but for me it is very hard work to find it and to add this kind of selector in your mod… what do you think about it_?
Comment by miha — May 22, 2010 @ May 22, 2010 2:30 am
Just what we all needed, thankyou. (quite surprised Joomla didnt have something in place already)
I’m just having problems posting a segment of the article to the main page – with a link to the article (and then of course having the segment hidden once viewing the whole article) or even better, is it possible to just have a thumbnail image as the link?
hope that makes sense. cheers

Hi Paul, I assume you use the beez template in the module settings. There is a named anchor as a divider between articles. Look into the modules/mod_placehere/tmpl/beez.php for the line and either remove the space or remove the line altogether. I guess I will change this for future versions.

Hello Eike,
Your module works fine, but on the end of every article I get a little hyphen, like this: -
Any idea how I could get rid of it?

Hi,
I have found another BUG which is quite annoying. If I turn “Show intro only” so I can display the “Read more” link, then all my other modules on the page turn invisible. They just don’t display anymore. Any fix regarding this ? You can reply me at my email adress.
Regards, and thanks for this very usefull module.

I have tried with article just to try id=7 … it doesn’t work
nothing is displayed

It now works. I changed the id to another article and it appeared correctly on the screen. I then turned back to the original article ID and now, very strange, it shows up..
Don’t get it, but it works
Great module by the way !!!

It still runs on the testmachine at my place. I haven’t installed the place here module on the server yet. I will follow your suggestion and try to rule out that it is a css problem.
Will keep you posted. Thanks for the quick response
Comment by Gino — February 24, 2010 @ February 24, 2010 10:47 pm
Do you already have a live url where I can look at the problem? Can you look at the source code to see if the text is there and just isn’t visible (meaning it’s a CSS problem) or if the text is missing ? Uncategorized content should work just fine (works for me anyway) but you should test with categorized content just to verify that the module is working at all.
Comment by Eike — February 24, 2010 @ February 24, 2010 8:49 pm
Hello Eike,
forget my previous post. Stupid of me to not tick off the show header.
However I have a problem in displaying the text of an article. I use a user6 position and in the place here module I specified the article-id (which is 46), but the article doesn’t appear on the screen. I know it is a bit vague, but nevertheless I am hoping you can help. Article is uncategorized. Should it be added to a section/categorie before it will display its contents??
Comment by Gino — February 24, 2010 @ February 24, 2010 8:10 pm
Works just like with any other module – go to the module manager, find the place here module, check the checkbox before the name and then click “copy” in the upper right corner of the Joomla administration screen. This will give you a new instance of the module (with a name of “Copy of [my modulename]” than can be configured separatly.
Comment by Eike — January 22, 2010 @ January 22, 2010 9:41 am
in comment 10 you indicated that you can have multiple copies of the module installed. Can you explain how to do this please?
Comment by Pattymac — January 22, 2010 @ January 22, 2010 7:56 am
No, at least not yet (the template system for the module is a bit lacking). But of course you can go to the mod_placehere/tmpl – directory and change the HMTL according to your needs.

Can Place Here inherit the ‘read me’ features of the template? I am using a template from yootheme.com and ‘read me’ has a certain apperance, but shows as text in com_placehere. Is it possible to inherit this?

Hi Eike,
I would like to put some articles whose access level are “registered” inside this module, and only show their intro text followed by “register to read more” button. So I set the access level of these articles to be “registered”, and “Show Unauthorised Links” of articles to be “Yes”, however, it simply doesn’t display anything inside the module. If I place these articles inside my mainBody area without using this module but with the same setting, they display as what I expected. Could you please give me some suggestions.
Thanks for this great contribution that helped me a lot. You rock!
Many thanks!!
Cheers,
Luque

Hi Lori,
for the moment I recommend that you use the previous version from here. While 1.2.1 works on my computer a number of people have reported that it doesn’t work for them – I was investigating this when my developement machine broke down, so there is a bit of a delay with bugfixes.
Comment by Eike — January 24, 2009 @ January 24, 2009 11:33 pm
Hi,
I’ve installed and configured the module, but unfortunately all I can get it to display is “Not Found” (turned on “Show Not Found”). I’ve done the following:
1) I’ve selected “Article” for Type
2) Set ID to the ID found in the Article Manager for the article I want to display – confirmed that article is published.
3) I’ve played with the 2 Frontpage settings as I have assigned the module to user4 on the main page.
I’ve also tried displaying a category instead. Any suggestions? I can’t think of why I can’t seem to display any articles. I’m using Version 1.2.1.
Comment by Lori — January 24, 2009 @ January 24, 2009 11:23 pm
Hey. I have a few questions about the module parameters:
I) Can Place Here inherit the ‘read me’ features of the template? I am using a template from yootheme.com and ‘read me’ has a certain apperance. Is it possible to inherit this?
II) What does Output Mode mean? I am using a css based no-table template, and I would like to keep the code as clean as possible. Does this choice affect this?
III) What does the Strip HTML parameter do in this module?
IV)What is the Gallery parameters at the end?
Thanks for answering. I’m testing out the extension, and I have hope that this is the extension that save my day in having absolute control over my content!

Hi Dainis,
the module shows articles from the article manager in module positions. You can have multiple copies of the module, so you can show articles anywhere where your template has a module position defined (and each copy of the module can hold multiple articles of course).
Comment by Eike — August 24, 2008 @ August 24, 2008 1:03 pm
I’m understanding better. Here’s what I want to do:
1) Write an article
2) Put it in it’s appropriate category or section
3) Have it appear in one of the modules
So, essentially, can I use “place here” to write an article and then place it wherever I like, or is there just one “here” that I can place articles, namely the position of the module?
I’d like to be able to place articles wherever I like.
Does that make sense?
Best,
Dainis
Comment by Dainis — August 24, 2008 @ August 24, 2008 12:59 pm
Hi Dainis,
you will find the options in the module manager when you klick on the name of the module (right hand there is the panel with the module parameters).
“Content Items” is just a matter of terminology, articles where called “content items” in previous Joomla versions.
Depending on what you want to display you would now go either to the section manager, category manager or article manager. There you would note the id of the section, cat or article(s) you wan to display. Go back to the module manager, place here module, parameters. Select the type of content (section, cat, article) you want to display and enter the number in the id field (multiple numbers as comma separated list). If the articles are published they will now appear in the module position.
Not goofy at all
Comment by Eike — August 20, 2008 @ August 20, 2008 8:15 am
I just published the module, and it appeared on my site! Kind of goofy…have no clue how to proceed!
Comment by Dainis — August 20, 2008 @ August 20, 2008 4:52 am
A few questions:
a) Do I need to publish the module and does it matter where I publish it?
b) How do I get to the options you are writing about?
c) What’s the deal with choosing “Content Item” in Module manager…I can’t find that.
Here are some tips for documentation structuring:
1) Installing the “Place Here” module
1.1) Download the most recent ZIP file and then upload it…
2) Maintaining and Upgrading the “Place Here” module
3) Tutorials
